6 Tips for Seniors to Stay Fit and Healthy

Focusing on your health is important at any age, but even more so after age 50. As you age, hormonal, cardiovascular and musculoskeletal changes occur that can affect your overall health and wellness. Maintaining a healthy weight with a nutritious, heart-healthy diet and staying active can help you to reduce disease and illness and keep you healthy and strong. Here are six tips to help you stay fit and healthy:

  1. Document your family health history to help you and your doctor understand what diseases you may be at risk for and so that you can get screened to prevent them.
  2. Get regular screenings and wellness visits with your doctor to prevent disease, not just when you are sick.
  3. Making healthy food and drink choices like fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy, whole grains, lean meats and water.
  4. Stand up and stay active throughout the day with at least 150 minutes a week of moderate physical activity and muscle strengthening at least twice per week.
  5. Do not use tobacco – it’s not too late to quit. Smoking and tobacco use can lead to cancer and lung disease. Get help free at 1-800-QUIT-NOW.
  6. Pay attention to changes in brain health and memory. If you or your family have concerns, speak with your doctor about dementia or Alzheimer’s disease screening.
