Fending off COVID-19 with the Sun isn’t a Bright Idea
There have been rumors that COVID-19 cannot spread in the sun or heat, but is this true? Memorial Health System chief medical officer Dr. Rajesh Govindaiah says the claim is wrong.
“While some viral illnesses like the flu act seasonally, COVID-19 is growing at a faster rate during the summer,” said Dr. Govindaiah. “Illinois has managed to decrease cases, but most states are seeing an increase in new COVID-19 cases and US cases are at an all-time high. That’s why it is important to practice social distancing and take actions to prevent the spread.”
Here are some ways in which you can help to prevent the spread of COVID-19:
- If you are sick, stay home. You should also avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Practice social distancing. Maintain a distance of at least six feet between yourself and others.
- Clean your hands frequently. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use a 60% alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
- Cover your mouth and nose. Wear a cloth face cover when around others.
- Clean and disinfect high-touch areas daily. The CDC offers recommendations for cleaning and disinfection for households.
