Your Water Bottle is Trendy, But What’s Actually In It?
Water tumblers are all the rage – in a wide variety of colors, sizes, even straw options. Others allow for creativity through sticker decoration. But what’s inside your water bottle is the most important factor for good health.
“Too often we think that because we are drinking a fluid, it must also be hydrating,” said Nicole Florence, MD, and medical director for Memorial Wellness Center. “But fluids that contain caffeine actually stimulate you to eliminate more fluid than what you’ve taken in and may actually be a risk for dehydration.”
No matter what fun tumbler you choose, water is the best option for filling it. Dr. Florence emphasizes that water transports essential sources of fuel, vitamins and minerals to the body, assists with chemical reactions in the cells and helps transport toxins away for excretion.
“On average, you need at least 64 ounces a day and possibly more depending on weight, activity and exercise,” she said. “When you fall short of that amount, you are at risk for headaches, fatigue, dry mouth and constipation.”
Here are tips to stay hydrated throughout the day:
- Always keep a source of water available – in your car, at work, around your living space.
- Set goals throughout the day to drink three to four tumblers worth of water.
- Don’t overdo alcohol or caffeine, which can dehydrate you.
- Be alert to the color of your urine, which should appear pale yellow instead of dark yellow.
“Challenge yourself to be more aware of your water intake,” Dr. Florence added. “It can make a big difference in how you feel and how well your body functions.”
