10 Smart Ways to Enjoy the State Fair Without Missing the Fun

Thanks to our Memorial Wellness Center experts for Illinois State Fair tips on how to have fun but still eat healthy (mostly!) when you are strolling the fairgrounds.

  • Make Water Your Fair MVP Walking the fairgrounds in summer heat can sneak up on you. Keep a water bottle handy and sip throughout the day. Staying hydrated helps you stay energized and can even help you enjoy the food more.
  • Swap in Diet Drinks When You Can Planning to grab a soda? Choosing a diet or zero-sugar option can help cut back on added sugar while still satisfying that craving.
  • Think “Slider-Sized” You don’t have to skip the foods you came for. Instead, look for smaller portions or split treats with family and friends. Fair food tastes just as good in a few bites as it does in a giant basket.
  • Hit the Ag Tent One of the fair’s hidden gems is the Agriculture Tent, where you can find fresh watermelon, sweet corn, peaches, melon and salads. Take a refreshing break from the fried favorites.
  • Cool Off with a Sugar-Free Sno-Cone Nothing says fair day like an icy treat. If you’re looking for a lighter option, sugar-free sno-cones can help you beat the heat without all the extra sugar.
  • Storm the Iced Tea Stands There seem to be more iced tea options than ever this year. Unsweetened tea can be a refreshing choice when you want something flavorful that’s not loaded with sugar.
  • Fresh Fruit Cups Deserve Your Attention Fresh fruit cups are showing up across the fairgrounds this year and make a quick, portable snack packed with hydration, vitamins and fiber.  Give Agua Fresca a Try Looking for something cool and refreshing? Agua frescas can be a great way to enjoy fresh fruit flavors while exploring the fair.
  • Push Protein First Before diving into desserts and snacks, try to include some protein in your meal. Protein helps keep you satisfied longer so you’re less likely to feel sluggish later. Think Pork Producers tent.
  • Venture Beyond the Fried Food The Village of Cultures offers delicious options (not always deep-fried), which may include vegetables, beans and other nutrient-rich ingredients. Explore something new while adding a little variety to your fair menu.

Most Important Tip: Have FUN

Let’s be honest. The food is part of what makes the Illinois State Fair special. It’s perfectly OK to enjoy your favorite fair treats. Focus on staying cool, staying hydrated, packing in some protein and fiber where you can, and walking plenty as you explore the grounds.

The best fair food plan? Make room for both the corn dog and the watermelon.
