Don’t sweat it. They are hoverflies.
You may have noticed a small swarm of flying insects buzzing around and mistaken them for sweat bees. But the hoverfly is an annoyance, not a threat. Although they resemble small bees, they only have two wings and are shiny.
However, bees and other stinging insects are still active throughout the fall. Here are some steps you can take to prevent insect stings:
- Wear light-colored clothing.
- Avoid perfume, cologne or scented toiletries when going outdoors.
- Wear clean clothing that covers as much of the body as possible.
- Remain calm around insects – swatting a stinging insect may cause it to sting.
- Seek a professional to remove or relocate a bee, wasp or hornet nest.
If you’re stung:
- Wash the affected area with soap and water.
- Remove the stinger by hand.
- Apply ice to reduce swelling.
If you need help recovering from an insect sting or you develop an allergic reaction, seek medical help.
