Cardiology Specialists – What is Their Role for Patient Heart Care?

The heart is a complex organ, which needs to function at an optimum level for you to feel your best. Fortunately, there are specialized healthcare providers devoted to different aspects of heart health and heart care.

  • Cardiologist: A general cardiologist is the primary care provider for your heart. A cardiologist will diagnose heart conditions, develop a comprehensive strategy for treatment and captain your healthcare team. A cardiologist will oversee heart examinations, blood pressure management, cholesterol control, lifestyle modifications and care coordination with specialists.
  • An Interventional Cardiologist: This specialist is laser-focused on the heart’s circulatory system, unclogging arteries and restoring blood flow. Services might include angioplasty, stent replacement or replacement peripheral artery disease treatment.
  • An Electrophysiologist: This provider zeroes in on the heart’s electrical system – diagnosing and/or treating heart arrhythmia. An electrophysiologist may install an implantable cardioverter defibrillator or a pacemaker or recommend ablation therapy.

“Having access to these types of specialists can make caring for your heart close to home a much easier journey,” said Kimberly Paskiewicz, system administrator for specialty services at Memorial Health.
