Celebrate Global Handwashing Day: Clean Hands, Healthy Communities

person washing hand in sinkEvery year on October 15, we recognize Global Handwashing day,  a reminder of how something as simple as washing your hands can protect your health and the health of those around you.

Handwashing is one of the easiest and most effective ways to prevent the spread of infections like colds, flu and even foodborne illnesses. Yet many people skip steps or start in the wrong place. (Hint: the first step is not soap!)

Handwashing for Results

  1. Wet hands with clean, running water.
  2. Apply soap and lather well, scrubbing backs of hands, between fingers and under nails.
  3. Scrub for at least 15 seconds — humming “Happy Birthday” twice is an easy timer.
  4. Rinse well under running water.
  5. Dry with a clean towel.

What About Hand Sanitizer?

When soap and water aren’t available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Rub it over all surfaces of your hands until dry (about 20 seconds). Remember: sanitizer works well for most germs, but soap and water are essential if your hands are visibly dirty, greasy or after caring for someone who is ill.

Why It Matters

Clean hands save lives. Ahead of the holidays, and during cold and flu season especially, taking at least 15 seconds at the sink helps protect your family, coworkers and community from illness.
