Safety Tips for Black Friday Shopping

The Black Friday craze may look different this year, but you can always prepare now for standing in line in frigid temps, avoiding the crush of shoppers sprinting for hot sales or even thumb fatigue – yes thumb fatigue – from mobile purchases.

“Unfortunately COVID-19 is still with us, and it remains important to avoid large crowds,” said Gina Carnduff, Memorial Health system director for Infection Prevention. “If you must chase after deals on Black Friday or during the holiday season, remember to wear a mask, social distance when possible and wash hands often. Plus, the COVID-19 vaccination provides enhanced protection against the virus.”

Of course you can surf online from the comfort of home to avoid the in-person jockeying for the latest deals. But be sure to avoid compulsive online buying that becomes an endless fixation, which can affect your bottom line and even mental health.

Here are some tips to help you navigate all the shopping this holiday season.

  1. Avoid germs. With people pawing through sale merchandise on Black Friday, exposure to germs is inevitable. Wear a mask. Keep your hands away from your eyes, mouth and nose and wash hands or use hand sanitizer frequently. And don’t forget to get a flu shot and COVID-19 vaccination.
  2. Bundle up. If you plan to wait outdoors, wear weather-appropriate clothing to keep warm. Cold weather injuries can occur in extremely cold temperatures but also at 40 degrees if a person becomes chilled from rain or sweat.
  3. Plan ahead for winter weather. Our emergency departments record more broken bones this time of year. Snow and ice increase slip and fall injuries. Wear shoes with good traction, take care when walking, and be mindful of road conditions while driving.
  4. Avoid maxing out. There’s more to worry about than your credit card limit while holiday shopping. Avoid conflict with other shoppers; keep holiday stress in check; and keep track of your online spending as well. Your physical, emotional and financial health takes priority over a sale.
  5. Maintain a sense of humor. Avoid rushing; find the good in your fellow shoppers; and keep an eye out for Santa Claus – who is undoubtedly looking for a last-minute perfect present for Mrs. Claus.
