Four Ways AFib’s Heart Rhythm Disorder Affects Your Health

Atrial fibrillation (AFib) occurs when the heart’s upper chambers beat irregularly and often rapidly, upsetting the normal flow of blood. Some people with AFib do not experience any symptoms, but others may feel noticeable physical changes.

“Think of AFib as your heart’s electrical system being disrupted,” said Bernard Lim, MD, PhD, a cardiac electrophysiologist with Memorial Specialty Care. “Instead of a steady, coordinated beat, the atria quiver.”

Symptoms of AFib may include:

  • Heart palpitations
  • Shortness of breath
  • Weakness or fatigue
  • Chest discomfort

“The danger of AFib is that it can significantly increase the risk of stroke, heart failure and other complications,” said Dr. Lim. “That’s why it is important to address the arrhythmia.”

Treatment options vary depending on the individual case. They may include:

  1. Medications to control heart rate or rhythm
  2. Cardioversion to reset the heart’s rhythm
  3. Catheter ablation to address problematic heart tissue
  4. Lifestyle changes to reduce risk factors

Dr. Lim emphasizes the importance of early detection and management: “With proper treatment and lifestyle modifications, many AFib patients can lead full, active lives. The key is not to ignore symptoms and to work closely with your healthcare provider.”
