Importance of Advance Care Planning – No Matter How Old You Are
Too many people and their loved ones were caught unprepared when the COVID-19 pandemic swept the globe. People of all ages were fighting for their lives in hospitals. Often their loved ones had no idea what their wishes were when it came to healthcare treatment.
Advance Care Planning is one way to protect your loved ones against the uncertainty of knowing your wishes if you face a healthcare crisis. It is basically the process of considering, discussing and documenting your preferences related to future healthcare treatment. You will want to:
- Schedule a discussion with an Advance Care Planning facilitator to discuss values and beliefs.
- Appoint a decision-maker among your family or close friends.
- Complete relevant advance directives.
Advance Care Planning services are available in any Memorial Health hospital or through Memorial Care. For more information, tune in to one of our Advance Care Planning Informational Sessions held online the first Tuesday of each month. Register by email at ACP@mhsil.com. Or call 217-757-7253 to schedule an Advance Care Planning appointment or request a mailed packet of information.
