Senior Life Solutions Helps Seniors Learn Coping Strategies
Did you know as many as one in five older adults experience mental health concerns separate from normal aging? Anxiety and mood disorders are most common, but depression can also emerge.
The Senior Life Solutions program at Taylorville Memorial Hospital helps older adults who struggle with mental health concerns. Seniors are a vital part of a healthy community. Many older adults raise grandchildren, volunteer in schools and churches and offer advice and support to younger generations.
The outpatient program promotes a group therapy environment that provides a safe place to provide support, promote social skills and give individuals the opportunity to successfully overcome struggles. Erie Miller, 70, is a former graduate of Senior Life Solutions. He appreciates the support the program offered during a time of great anxiety.
“When you have anxiety, you isolate yourself,” Erie said. “Nobody understands. My wife didn’t. My kids didn’t have any idea. But these people did. I had someone to relate to. Senior Life Solutions is a great program. It’s better than sitting home in a rocking chair trying to figure it out yourself!”
Senior Life Solutions participants have the opportunity to meet with the group three to four times a week from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for group therapy and peer support. Lunch and transportation are provided.
“For many seniors, aging is a major transition to navigate,” said Amy Graham, Lead RN. She interacts with seniors who deal with depression, grief, guilt, personality changes, adjustment disorders and changes in sleep or appetite.
“Changing bodies, family, friendships and changes in living situation can all influence one’s mental health,” she said. “Undiagnosed and untreated mental health issues have serious implications for older adults and their loved ones.”
