Virtual Care Brings Convenient, Compassionate Care Home

When you’re sick, waiting to see a provider can add frustration to an already difficult day. For Suzanne VanDerSlik, 27, of Chatham, virtual care (also known as telehealth) has consistently offered a convenient alternative.

“I’ve been using telehealth services for at least 10 years,” said VanDerSlik, a teacher’s assistant. “I appreciate avoiding that wait. Using telehealth eases the mind knowing you will be seen in the comfort of your own home, at the time of your choice. The care offered is just as amazing!”

Memorial Health’s virtual care options connect patients with Memorial Care providers through two-way video technology using a computer or mobile device. Telephone visits are also available for patients without access to a mobile device.

Urgent care virtual visits can be appropriate for a variety of needs, including:

  • Respiratory illnesses
  • Allergies
  • Skin concerns
  • Urinary tract infections

Primary care virtual care visits can also cover medication adjustments, follow-up care and some chronic conditions. A provider may recommend an in-person appointment when appropriate.

For VanDerSlik, the value of telehealth goes beyond convenience. It’s also about feeling heard and cared for.

She credits both advanced practice provider Amber Sperry and Kristina Waggoner, APRN,  for consistently providing compassionate care.

In November 2025, VanDerSlik nominated Sperry for a DAISY Award, describing how meaningful it was to have a provider who took the time to truly listen.

VanDerSlik said communicating in a medical setting can sometimes be difficult. With Sperry, she felt she had the time and space she needed to communicate without feeling rushed or judged.

“Her dedication to patient-centered care has made a tremendous difference in my experience,” VanDerSlik wrote of Sperry in her nomination. “Amber provides not only medical expertise but also comfort, trust and reassurance during difficult moments.”

For patients like VanDerSlik, virtual care offers the best of both worlds: convenient access to care and providers who make her feel comfortable and heard.

“Being sick is frustrating,” she said. With telehealth, getting care doesn’t have to add to that frustration.
