Tyre “Ty” Rees exudes the spirit of volunteer service as he shares his time and talents with patients, visitors and employees at Springfield Memorial Hospital.

Over the past 13 years, he has donated more than 6,000 hours, which led to his recent honor as one of 24 local Good as Gold Community Award winners.

“The Good as Gold awards honor people who give their time and talents to make Sangamon County a better place to live,” said Ginny Evans, director of hospitality for Springfield Memorial Hospital. “Ty is always willing to adjust his availability to accommodate the daily and weekly needs of Volunteer Services and is always reminding us that he’s available as a last-minute substitute. Just call him!”

Ty escorts discharged patients from the hospital, assists employees on the individual units and provides comfort items to patients in the Emergency Department. He does it all with humility and compassion for others. He also encourages others to consider volunteering.

“I tell people it’s a great place to socialize and find joy from helping other people,” he said. “There are plenty of volunteer jobs to suit everyone.”
